So the wrestling tournament is over (it was yesterday). I stopped posting run-up bits because they devolved into 'x' is what I ate today, 'y'is my workout plan, 'z' is how my weight is. BOOORING. (even to me). So I made my weight goal (weight class was 205, I was 203.5 at weigh-in), and I even felt good - the benefits of a relatively slow weight drop. Unfortunately I didn't win. My first match was against a wrestling coach from a local university - who happened to be 10 years younger than me and a former Division III National qualifier. Yeah, he was good - or at least much better than I was! Second match went much better, but with the same result. Another guy much younger, who does this regularly (just out of college, coaches at his HS) but I feel like I gave a good accounting of myself. I also feel that if I'm going to do this again I need better cardio - I could feel myself losing my wind early on. So, the plan is maintain nutrition, keep working out, and add more running to the routine ...I may also start playing raquetball with some people from work who have a regular game every week.

EDIT: Pics (such as I have) are up on fb.

hon... did you see a guy named Dan compete who went through to the finals? just curious, because i've been IMing with someone who lives out near Rochester who was also at a wrestling tournament yesterday...

yay making weight goal and yay competing! (in my mind it doesn't matter what happened so much as all the amazing effort you put into getting back into shape to do it - gah)

if you were closer, i'd say we should run together :) i HAVE to get my butt back on track with the cardio. black belt written test is in two weeks...

there were a couple Dan's there and I think 2 made it into the finals...
and yeah, it's a 'win' just to meet my goals!
I hate running. I do it, and I know I need to do it. I use treadmills when the weather sucks and I run outside once it gets warm. But I still hate running!

good luck on the black belt test!

the one i'm chatting with just told me he won.

i'm feeling a tad intimidated, knowing how strong *you* are.

Well, then it's not the 'Dan' I wrestled ...he was gracious in victory, but left in a snit when he lost. (some peoples' kids, I tell ya!)

well... the very fact that you know that means you didn't leave in a snit. ;) you should publicize dates and stuff the next time you do this. i'm tempted to come and watch. though i have a feeling there's a limit to how much you can pick up from just watching.

I'll bear that in mind. And you're right, watching is a limited way to pick things up, but we have a few guys who are pretty good at 'esplainin the how's, why's and wherefores of what is happening in a match. :)

well, i've also been jonesing for a daytrip somewhere. anywhere. gonna take a look-see at Letchworth at some point soon, too. aren't you out that way?

Yeah, Letchworth is about 20 minutes up the road. Also we have Sotneybrook State Park about 5 minutes away (it's very nice too, but much smaller than Letchworth). Meet you there one weekend?

It's worse than that fb is locked down to only friends!

and as far as running... i actually kind of like it... at least once i get good at it. the "getting good" at it, though, sucks. i had a black belt in my dojo suggest sprints - run 500 yards or so as fast as you can, then walk back, over and over til your wind is good. this sounds incredibly boring to me, but probably very useful.

and written test... thank you! i'll take all the luck i can get. ;)

You might also want to see if you can get in with a HS as an assistant coach or helper. I know that all of Noah's coaches still wrestle and use that as part of their strategy.

In Monroe County we also have the APEX program for off school season wrestling for the boys. Noah goes 3 times a week and learns Greco, Freestyle and one other variations. All the coaches volunteer and again, use it to keep in shape/up on their game.
You might want to check it out and see if you can help. :)

Yeah, I looked into APEX (2 of the kids at the dojo train there - both wrestle for East Roch) - their '13 and up' policy means 'up to the end of your college career', unfortunately for me (although I dodn't ask about coaching; hmmm...). But Kate and I are in agreement that I need to look into volunteering at Dansville HS for next season. Tell Noah 'good luck'!

You are winning just by trying

Thank you for the compliment! I believe that you, more than anybody else I know, win most days just by getting up to face the world, so having you say that to me means a lot! Be well, and give Delilah skritches and pets for me!
